2014 Alta Loma Vineyard Grenache

Years of accumulating drought led to significant vine stress at Alta Loma in 2014.  Lower vine vigor, smaller clusters, and thicker skins were the most significant impacts, resulting in a wine that is more rich, dark and ripe in style compared to previous bottlings.  Powerful aromatics including red and black plum, raspberry and cigar, reflect the small-batch production and gentle handling involved in crafting this wine.  In the mouth the red fruit components show in unison with hints of earth, fresh humus, leather and intense fresh and dry herbs. The texture is medium bodied with great mouth-coat and chalky tannins persist on a long finish. A natural compliment to food in general, serve this wine with grilled veg, roast chicken, pork loin, or alone as a serious think-piece for discerning friends.

Since the beginning, our Alta Loma Grenache has represented our most natural wine. This storied vineyard in southern Monterey County is farmed biodynamically in a beautiful setting of rolling hills and natural diverse cover crops. The vineyard’s aspect allows for great morning light exposure, as well as protection from the hotter afternoon sun. This moderate climate and natural environment leads to the development of bright acidity and the addition of complex herbal notes to the fruit.  Handpicked at night (on the full moon of course) to keep the fruit cool, we de-stem to small batch fermentation bins and punch down by hand. After that – nothing. No chemical adjustments, no yeast or bacteria inoculation, no enzymes, no added acidity. The berries ferment long and slow receiving three manual punchdowns per day to stimulate naturally occurring yeasts. Upon dryness, the skins and resulting juice were pressed directly to neutral French oak before settling in for 10 months of zero-intervention maturation. The resulting wine is both unique and appealing for its intense aromatics and complexity.
