2014 Escolle Vineyard Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes:

The 2014 Escolle is our most classic and complex bottling from this vineyard to date.  The wine is powerful and rich, but exhibits an array of topsoil, fresh and dried herbs, and classic Pinot aromas that compliment the typically dense cherry fruit.  The barrel composition provides toasted notes of baked pie crust and scorched earth.  With air, powerful perfumed, red plum and forest floor emerge.  The wine is nicely balanced, not as ripe and jammy as many of its cousins in the Santa Lucia Highlands, but has much better potential for aging.  The mouth feel is soft yet dense in structure, while balanced acidity provides energy and a long finish. This is a powerful yet balanced Pinot Noir that expresses the vintage and appellation with integrity and finesse.

Winemaking Notes:

The Santa Lucia Highlands is renowned for its warm windy days, and cool nights.  These conditions produce Pinot Noir berries with thick, colorful skins and intense fruit aromas. The 2014 Vintage was moderate and dry with a long growing season that led to balanced acidity,  dense red color and restrained ripeness.  Fruit was meticulously picked and sorted by hand before being destemmed and berry sorted into small, ¾ ton bins for cold soak and fermentation.  Just after formation of a “cap”, which signals the beginning of native fermentation, we added our own select yeast strain and began a methodical pushdown regime.  The wine was pressed at dryness and allowed to settle for three days in tank before being barreled down to 100% French oak barrels, 33% of them new.  The wine was bottled after 18 months of elevage with no racking or movement.
