2014 Le Mistral Vineyard Syrah

42.00

The nose on this wine is well integrated, showing layers of dark berries, soy, dried violets, candied blueberry and a touch of caramel. It's soft and plush on the palate, with touches of milk chocolate, candied grapes and licorice. - Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast 94 pts

The Le Mistral Vineyard is one of California’s hidden gems.  Located just south of King City in the sandy Salinas Valley, our Syrah comes from select rows, at the highest peak in the vineyard.  Persistent wind leads to thick skinned Syrah grapes reminiscent of tiny leather punching bags.  Grapes are hand-picked and delivered in ½ ton bins before being destemmed and sorted.  20% of the fruit was laid in the sun to further dry for another 4 days.  These sun-dried clusters were added to the active fermentation whole-cluster.  Fermentation was carried out in small ¾ ton bins and punched down by hand three times daily.  We utilized a basket press to gently press out the finest wine found just beneath the skins before aging in French oak barrels and 500L puncheons for 18 months.

Tasting Notes:

Following on the heels of our critically acclaimed 2013 Le Mistral Syrah, this wine reveals rich blue and black fruit laced with wet asphalt and dried herbs.  The mouthfeel is viscous and balanced showcasing soft silky tannins.  Flavors of black cherry, roasted fig and truffle are dominant early.   With air, Josh describes aromas of a fresh overturned log in the forest intertwined with the fruit. Matt – ever the Botanist - confirmed that the log was indeed non-coniferous.   This wine is worthy of discussion over a diverse range of foods, and fans of powerful old world Syrah will recognize the classic nature of this new world wine.
