The Pendulum has swung again!  This vintage contains a higher proportion of Grenache, shifting the fruit aromas towards the red color spectrum, with elevated fresh fruit and lively balanced acid.  Once again, the wine’s bouquet blasts from the glass, showing rich notes of currant and red cherries, supported by fresh dry herbs and subtle blue berry fruit.  High toned strawberry and raspberry notes emerge with time in the glass.  Classic and subtle oak aromas present themselves as walnut shell and baked pie crust.  Tobacco leaf and humidor nuances round out a complex nose. Powerful flavors include red plums and black cherries, fennel and tobacco.  The texture in the mouth is both dense and lively, filling yet balanced, showing ultra-soft tannins and good acidity.  The wine finishes long, with lingering notes of toasty French oak and expressive, ripe fruit.  We love the wines of Gigondas and Chateauneuf du Pape and are very happy that our 2014 Pendulum blend reminds us of the best we’ve had from these regions.

Our latest Pendulum blend is composed of Grenache and Syrah grapes sourced from our cherished Central Coast Rhone growing partners.  Le Mistral us an organically farmed, sandy vineyard in the rugged heart of the Salinas Valley, Le Mistral’s gusty winds naturally create Syrah berries with tough, color-laden skins that bring the depth and strength to our Pendulum blend.  The Grenache comes from Alta Loma Vineyard, a biodynamic vineyard in one of the coolest areas of Monterey County.  True expression of Grenache is rarely found in Monterey County, but we love the bright, fresh fruit and tobacco notes that are invariably found within the fruit from this impeccably farmed vineyard.  The grapes were harvested at optimum ripeness and de-stemmed upon receiving at the winery.   The fruit was hand sorted and gently crushed prior to three days of cold soaking in small ¾ ton bins.  This small batch fermentation technique provides a fresh aromatic profile while allowing the gentle extraction of soft tannin.  The Grenache portion is completely natural, with no additions, and no commercial yeast used.  For our Syrah, fermentation was allowed to start spontaneously before we micro-inoculated each bin with our favorite yeast strain.  We punched down aggressively, three times daily for the duration of fermentation to extract all of what each vineyard had to offer.  When fully dry, the wine was drained and the must was basket pressed to 100% French Oak barrels and puncheons to begin 20 months of barrel aging.
